Powerstats uses data freely available from football-data.co.uk. I have spent a lot of time parsing this data and coming up with systems. The current system uses a series of weights based on overall season form, current form etc. It gives each team a rating and the rating of a team changes depending on the result of the team they have just played, so for example a low rating team beating a high rated team would see a big increase in their rating.
The weights for wins/losses/draws change for each league that the system runs on, from my research I have found that the different leagues all have their own 'personalities' as it were and running the same system of filters and weights on all of them doesn't work. For example the German league seems to produce a larger number than normal of high priced away wins whereas the English Premier league is suited more to banker home wins.
Powerstats has just finished it's first complete season (2009/2010) and based on 10 points per selection (I stuck a tenner on each one) finished up 649 points based on the odds freely available on Betfair. A decent return by any standard.
The downside to it is that it comes up with an awful lot of selections, sometimes up to 20 on a Saturday. During the Summer I will be working on an alternative version that comes up with far fewer selections, something that I think people will be more inclined to follow. I'll also be using the original version though next season (2010/2011).
Thanks for the good job man

Hi Philip, Apologies for not replying sooner! Yep last season I ran the powerstats from start to finish with no changes. I'd stopped, tweaked and restarted a couple of times the previous seasons so wanted to run the same system this time all the way through.
Cheers

Hi,
I've been following your blog for a while now, and find it really interesting. Did the software / algorithms behind powerstats change throughout the season? Or was it fixed at the beginning?
Cheers.
